Magnetic Amplifier Circuits (2nd Edition). By
William A. Geyger.
(McGraw-Hill. 52s. 6d. Pp. 394)
This book covers in a clear and concise
manner the development and uses of the magnetic
amplifier from its inception to the present
day.
The book, although primarily written for the
servo-circuit designer, is very suitable for the
student who is approaching the subject for the
first time because rather than adopting an intensely
mathematical approach the author has
made use of descriptive and graphical methods
to give a clear picture of an otherwise complex
mathematical subject.
The opening chapters cover the classification
of saturable core devices, the historical development
of the magnetic amplifier and the construction,
core materials and types of windings used
to give optimum performance.
Amplifier circuitry is then discussed in detail
with complete chapters on non-feedback, internal
and external feedback with single stage or
cascade connection and single-ended or pushpull
output. The chapter describing the relatively
new fast' half-cycle response magnetic
amplifiers represents one of the most up-to-date
surveys of developments in this field.
A chapter on the technical properties of magnetic
amplifiers gives an easily digested analysis
of the transient response of magnetic amplifiers,
and methods of practically determining it are
discussed.
Typical applications are then dealt with, examples
being drawn from many aspects of
servo-technique with descriptions of magnetic
frequency multipliers and phase sensitive rectifiers.
Finally an interesting application of magnetic
amplifier circuits for the tracing of
dynamic hysteresis loops is described.
, One of the most valuable aspects of the book
is the detailed bibliography at the end of each
chapter giving references to patents and articles
in the magnetic amplifier field up to 1957.
The book is well produced and the diagrams
are clear. This book can be thoroughly recommended
to the advanced student. J.W.S.P.
